Al Marqab Fort

A fortress located 5 km east of Baniyas, built in 1062 on top of a hill at an altitude of 370 m above sea level, surrounded by mountains and forests, and a huge moat through which a stairway passes over a bridge to the main entrance to the castle.

Surrounded by two walls, both internal and external, and the outer wall contains 14 impregnable defensive towers. Inside the castle are many facilities and buildings such as the Knights’ Hall, the Royal Hall, a church dating back to the second century, facilities, cabinets, passages of the walls and towers.

The spirit of art is not lacking inside that castle, as the church contains many frescoes that were completed in the 12th century AD, the most important of which is a mural representing (The Last Supper), which is a wonderful colorful painting comprising 12 people with yellow halos on their heads. The center is a picture showing (Paul the Apostle), and on one of the walls also appears a mural, which is the largest of the medieval paintings, which is a strip of 6 meters in length and 3 meters in height, containing two scenes, the first representing Hell and the second representing Heaven! On the eastern side of the temple, he discovered a painting representing the murder of Saint John.
